First-Inning Explosion Leads Shenango to 10-3 Victory Over Schuylkill
Myrtle Beach, SC – A massive six-run first inning, punctuated by a John Perry grand slam, was all the offense Penn State Shenango needed to secure a convincing 10-3 victory over Penn State Schuylkill on Wednesday at Crosley Field.
Shenango wasted no time getting to work in the top of the first. After Troy Bachman drew a leadoff walk and Dante Micaletti singled, Jason Malley drove in the game's first run with an RBI single to right. Dominic Fornataro followed with an infield RBI single to double the lead. The knockout blow came moments later when John Perry cleared the bases with a grand slam to center field, giving Shenango a 6-0 cushion before Schuylkill even picked up a bat.
Fornataro added to the lead in the second inning with his second RBI single of the day, scoring Anthony Miller to make it 7-0.
On the mound, Brady Walker turned in a dominant performance to earn his first win of the season. Walker went 4.2 innings, racking up nine strikeouts while allowing just one earned run on four hits. JA Quahliero provided stellar relief, throwing 2.1 hitless innings to close out the game and keep the Schuylkill bats quiet.
Schuylkill managed to scratch across two runs in the third and one in the fifth, aided by a pair of Shenango defensive miscues, but the outcome was never in doubt. Shenango added insurance runs in the fifth on a Nate Evans RBI single and a fielder's choice from Will Nardone. Nardone capped the scoring in the seventh with a groundout that brought home Evans for the 10th run of the game.
