Lady Lions Push Pitt–Bradford to the Limit in Five-Set Thriller
The Penn State Shenango Women's Volleyball team put together its strongest effort of the young season Tuesday afternoon, taking undefeated Pitt–Bradford the distance before falling in a hard-fought five-set battle (25–18, 21–25, 20–25, 25–20, 15–9) on the road at the McDowell Sport & Fitness Center. Shenango (1–3) bounced back after dropping the opening frame, storming back to win the next two sets behind a balanced offensive attack. With the momentum on their side, the Lady Lions pushed Pitt–Bradford to the brink, but the Panthers clawed back in the fourth and sealed the match with a decisive fifth set.
Savana Shipman led the charge with 12 kills, 11 digs, and two service aces for a team-high 16 points. Izzy Mauro was dominant at the net, hitting .500 with nine kills and four blocks. Sydney Ward contributed eight kills, two aces, and nine digs, while Taylor Burns added nine kills and 10 points. Setter Jadeyn Zepeda guided the offense with 34 assists and chipped in 12 digs. Defensively, Shenango's back row dug 53 balls on the night, led by Shipman, Zepeda, and Jillian Palumbo, while the Lions' blocking unit totaled 10 rejections to keep the Panthers' hitters in check.
Despite the setback, the Lady Lions' performance against a 5–0 Pitt–Bradford squad showcased their growth and resilience.
Next up, Shenango returns home to host the defending USCAA Champions, Kent State–Tuscarawas, on Thursday, September 11, at 6:00 PM at the Buhl Club. The matchup will feature a Patriotic Theme Night for students and fans — so wear your red, white, and blue and help create a sea of stars and stripes in support of the Lady Lions!
