Shenango Drops Heartbreaker to Mont Alto in Extra-Inning Battle
Penn State Shenango battled back and forth with Penn State Mont Alto Saturday afternoon, but a late rally by Mont Alto handed Shenango a tough 9-8 loss in postseason action. Shenango erased an early deficit with a huge fourth inning and carried the lead late before Mont Alto walked it off in the eighth inning.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, Shenango answered in the third when Dominic Fornataro delivered an RBI double, tying the game at 1-1. The offense exploded in the fourth inning with seven runs. Anthony Miller highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, while Mason Bevan added a two-RBI double. John Perry contributed an RBI double, and Nate Evans drove in a run as Shenango surged ahead 8-1.
Mont Alto began chipping away in the bottom half of the fourth with a five-run inning before adding another run in the fifth to make it 8-7. Shenango's pitching staff settled things down through the middle innings, with Jacob Csonka tossing a scoreless inning in relief and Brady Walker working two innings out of the bullpen to keep Shenango in front entering the late innings. However, Mont Alto tied the game in the seventh before pushing across the winning run in the eighth inning.
Despite the loss, Shenango's offense produced 10 hits, with Fornataro collecting three hits and Anthony Miller driving in two runs with his fourth-inning homer.
