Shenango Falls in Extra-Inning Battle with Lorain County CC
Penn State Shenango baseball opened its home schedule with a marathon battle on Saturday, ultimately falling 8-3 in an 8-inning contest against Lorain County Community College at Pemberton Park. Despite a strong start and a resilient performance from the pitching staff, a late-inning surge by the visitors proved to be the difference.
Shenango tied the game up in the bottom of the opening frame, as Jason Malley delivered a sharp RBI single to center field to knot the score at 1. The score remained locked there until the bottom of the third inning. Dante Micaletti reached on a fielder's choice and quickly swiped second base. Dominic Fornataro then lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Micaletti to tag and score, pushing Shenango ahead 2-1. The defensive unit remained active throughout the middle innings, turning two key double plays to end threats. Nate Evans started on the mound and gave Shenango a strong 5.1 innings, striking out one and keeping the game tight into the late stages.
Shenango mounted a final comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 3-2, Brady Walker worked a walk and moved to second on another walk. Malley then stepped up again, lacing a double down the left-field line to score Walker and tie the game up. However, the visitors capitalized on the extra frame to plate five runs in the top of the 8th.
Malley led the offensive charge, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Fornataro contributed two hits and an RBI.
