St. Clair County CC Pulls Away Early to Defeat Shenango
In a tough neutral-site matchup at Griffith Field in Myrtle Beach, Penn State Shenango fell to St. Clair County Community College by a score of 13-3 on Thursday afternoon.
Shenango jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. After Nate Evans singled and Jason Malley reached on an error by the center fielder, Evans was able to cross the plate to make it 1-0. However, the lead was short-lived, as St. Clair County responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame and added two more in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
The game broke open in the bottom of the third inning. St. Clair County capitalized on three Shenango errors to push nine runs across the plate, extending their advantage to 12-1.
Shenango continued to battle, finding some offensive rhythm in the top of the fifth. Brady Walker led off with a single, followed by Connor Doeberiener being hit by a pitch and Jake Shumate drawing a walk to load the bases. Josh Divens then drove in Walker with a fielder's choice. Moments later, Doeberiener scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 12-3. St. Clair County added a final unearned run in the bottom of the fifth to reach the 13-3 final.
Nate Evans led the way offensively for Shenango, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored. Brady Walker and Jason Malley also recorded hits in the contest. On the mound, Josh Day and Will Nardone combined for two strikeouts, though the defense struggled with six errors on the day.
