Shenango Battles Back to Force Extras in 8-6 Loss to Schuylkill
Penn State Shenango fell 8-6 to Penn State Schuylkill in a back-and-forth contest in Myrtle Beach on March 11th. Despite a late-inning push and a multi-hit performance from the offense, Shenango couldn't overcome an early deficit in the extra-inning matchup.
The game opened with Schuylkill jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Shenango responded immediately. In the bottom half of the frame, Jason Malley drove in Troy Bachman with an RBI single, followed by a Dominic Fornataro RBI single to knot the game at 2-2. Schuylkill regained the lead with a solo home run in the second and two more runs in the third to make it 5-2. Shenango chipped away at the lead in the fourth when Fornataro crossed the plate on a balk. In the fifth inning, Malley launched a solo homerun to center field, his second RBI of the day, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
After Schuylkill added a run via a solo homer in the sixth, Shenango answered again. Dante Micaletti recorded an RBI single to bring home JA Quahliero, making it a 6-5 ballgame. The comeback was completed in the seventh when Mikey Guarnieri doubled to left field, driving in Fornataro to tie the game at 6-6 and force the contest into an extra frame.
In the top of the eighth, Schuylkill capitalized on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and a groundout to plate two runs. Shenango was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning.
