Shenango Leaves Everything on the Floor in Heart-Stopper
Lemont Furnace, PA- In their final match of the 2025 season, the Penn State Shenango Women's Volleyball team delivered one of their most spirited, high-intensity battles of the year, pushing Wright State–Lake to a dramatic five-set finish before ultimately falling 3–2 in an emotional, momentum-swinging showdown at the PSU Fayette campus.
From the start, Shenango came out with fire, confidence, and urgency, taking complete control of the opening sets. In Set 1, the Lions jumped ahead early with aggressive swings from Savana Shipman, Sydney Ward, and Taylor Burns. Their defense ignited the surge, with strong blocking at the net and a perfectly placed service ace from Jillian Palumbo giving Shenango an early cushion. Ward hammered down key kills as Shenango pulled away and secured the set 25–19.
Set 2 showcased the Lions at their highest level of dominance all season. A 7–0 run behind Taegan Scheller's serving flipped the gym's energy, forcing Wright State into panic mode. Mauro added a kill, Ward delivered back-to-back aces, and the Lions stretched their lead to 10–6 before continuing to roll. Shenango's offense was in sync, the defense was steadied, and the team stormed to a commanding 25–16 victory.
With a 2–0 match lead, Shenango stepped into Set 3 determined to finish the job and they battled point for point in one of the tightest sets of the entire tournament. Neither team led by more than two points as the scoreboard locked in a rhythm of ties and lead changes. Shenango pulled ahead late and seemed poised to close, but Wright State-Lake responded with a final push to edge the Lions 26–24. Still, Shenango's grit was undeniable, highlighted by clutch kills from Ward, Burns, Mauro, and Shipman, plus crucial digs that kept rallies alive.
Set 4 proved challenging as Wright State came out swinging, grabbing a quick 5–0 run that forced Shenango to regroup. The Lions clawed back with kills from Mauro and Shipman, but Wright State maintained the upper hand, taking the set 25–13 to force a decisive fifth.
The fifth set began with Shenango grabbing the first point and trading blows early. Burns added a kill, Shipman dropped another, and Scheller kept the pressure on, tying the score 3–3. But Wright State found a rhythm behind a tough serving run and created separation. Despite Shenango's fight—highlighted by kills from Ward, Shipman, and Burns—the Lions' comeback effort fell just short as Wright State-Lake closed the match 15–7.
Even in defeat, Shenango's stars left everything on the court. Ward delivered clutch swings throughout the match, Shipman provided vital offense under pressure, Mauro combined smart hitting with strong blocking, and Scheller sparked momentum with serve runs. Defensively, Palumbo and the back-row crew dug deep—literally and emotionally—keeping the team alive through extended rallies.
Although the season ended with this tough loss, Shenango walked away from the court with pride. Their performance reflected heart, resilience, unity, and the unmistakable identity they built all year. They did not fold in any moment of struggle. They battled through every rally. They responded to every punch thrown their way.
The final match of the season was not just a game—it was a powerful statement of who this team is.
Season complete. Effort unmatched. Heart undeniable.
