Shenango Falls to PSUAC Leader Beaver
In a high-stakes PSUAC clash at the Buhl Club on February 3, Penn State Shenango (6-12, 4-8) struggled to find its rhythm against a potent Penn State Beaver (17-4, 10-2) squad, ultimately falling 89-51. The game, held in honor of the "Coaches vs. Cancer" initiative, saw the Lions face an uphill battle from the opening tip as Beaver's high-pressure defense and deep bench proved too much to overcome.
The Lions were led by a spark off the bench from Gabrielle King, who delivered an efficient and dominant performance. King finished with a team-high 17 points on nearly perfect 8-of-9 shooting while also anchoring the interior with 3 blocks and 5 rebounds. Oyin Adio continued her steady play, contributing 13 points and leading the defensive effort with 4 steals, though she was hampered by foul trouble late in the game.
Penn State Beaver took control early, holding the Lions to just 8 points in the first quarter and 20 total in the first half. While Shenango found some offensive life in the third quarter—scoring 21 points behind Adio and King—Beaver responded with a relentless 53-point second half to pull away for good.
Alyssa Crankfield fought hard on the glass and the defensive end, tallying 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, while Kayla Owen played nearly the entire contest (39 minutes), contributing 5 points and 3 assists. Despite these efforts, Shenango was plagued by 40 turnovers, which Beaver capitalized on to fuel their transition game.
The Lions will look to regroup as they prepare for their next conference matchup. Shenango hosts New Kensington this Monday, February 9, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 PM.
