Fourth-Quarter Surge Propels Lions to Victory Over Fayette
In a resilient performance at the Buhl Club on January 31, Penn State Shenango (5-11, 4-7) orchestrated a dominant fourth-quarter comeback to secure a 69-60 victory over Penn State Fayette. After a cold third quarter that saw them score just six points and fall behind, the Lions erupted for 25 points in the final frame to pull away and clinch a hard-fought conference win.
The victory was powered by a balanced offensive attack and an aggressive defensive effort. Kayla Owen and Samair Colon shared the scoring lead with 17 points apiece. Owen was a force in the paint and transition, finishing 8-of-17 from the field, while Colon showcased her poise at the charity stripe, knocking down 7-of-8 free throws to help seal the game late.
Oyin Adio served as the engine of the offense, flirting with a triple-double by tallying 14 points, six assists, and four steals. Adio's ability to navigate the Fayette pressure and find open teammates was critical during the Lions' fourth-quarter rally. Joining her in double figures was Alyssa Crankfield, who turned in a massive defensive masterclass. Crankfield recorded a game-high five blocks to anchor the paint while adding 13 points and 11 rebounds for a dominant double-double.
The Lions' frontcourt also received a steady contribution from Shelby McBryar, who finished with eight points and seven rebounds, including three critical offensive boards that kept possessions alive during the second-half push.
Defensively, Shenango was relentless, racking up 13 steals and seven blocks as a unit. This pressure forced Fayette into 21 turnovers, which the Lions translated into 19 points off turnovers. Despite Fayette receiving 14-point performances from two Fayette players, they were held to just three points in the final quarter as Shenango's defense tightened to its highest level.
This win provides a significant boost for the Lions as they continue their push through the PSUAC schedule. Shenango will look to maintain this momentum as they return to the Buhl Club this Tuesday, February 3, to host Penn State Beaver at 6 PM.
