Washington’s Historic 45-Point Night Powers Shenango Past New Kensington
On a night dedicated to "Faculty and Staff Appreciation," Penn State Shenango (11-12, 7-8) delivered a masterclass performance at the Buhl Club, dismantling Penn State New Kensington in a 103-60 blowout victory. Shenango left no doubt from the opening tip, racing to a 56-24 halftime lead and never looking back in one of the most dominant statistical displays in program history.
The story of the night was Kevon Washington, who put together a legendary scoring performance. Washington exploded for a game-high 45 points, setting a new program record for single-game points, shooting a scorching 11-of-18 from three-point range. His 11 threes also set a new program record, smashing his own record set earlier this season. His ability to hit from anywhere on the floor demoralized the New Kensington defense early, as he finished 17-of-25 from the field while adding 3 steals in 34 minutes of action.
Equally impressive was the playmaking of Darius Williams, who turned in a truly unique stat line. Williams orchestrated the offense to perfection, recording a staggering 19 assists—setting a new program record, absolutely shattering his own record from earlier this season. In addition to his elite distribution, Williams contributed 8 points, 6 rebounds, and a game-high 7 steals, proving to be a nightmare for the visitors on both ends of the floor.
Izzy Santiago provided the perfect secondary scoring punch, finishing with 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting. Santiago was perfect from the charity stripe (7-of-7) and hauled in 6 rebounds, consistently finding ways to penetrate the paint and keep the scoreboard moving during Shenango's 47-point second half.
In the paint, Rhys Grocott anchored the defense and dominated the glass, finishing with 8 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Grocott's interior presence helped the Shenango match New Kensington on the boards while facilitating the offense with 2 assists and 2 steals.
Shenango's bench and supporting cast were also firing on all cylinders. Devin Alston contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds, while Jordan Dotson provided a perfect 3-of-3 shooting performance off the bench to finish with 8 points and 6 boards.
Shenango's team efficiency was staggering; they shot 50.6% from the floor and forced 26 turnovers, which they translated into a massive 43 points off turnovers. The unselfish pass game was the theme of the night, as they assisted on 32 of their 39 made field goals.
With the win, Shenango climbs back toward the .500 mark as they prepare for a critical road test this Wednesday, February 11, when they travel to face Penn State DuBois at 8:00 PM.
