Shenango’s Rally Falls Short in Narrow Road Loss to Greater Allegheny
In a defensive battle in McKeesport on February 7, Penn State Shenango (10-12, 6-8) saw their momentum halted in a hard-fought 67-61 loss to Penn State Greater Allegheny. Despite a resilient effort and a perfect performance from the charity stripe, Shenango couldn't overcome a narrow halftime deficit in a game defined by momentum swings and interior physicality.
The afternoon was a showcase for Shenango's perimeter stars, led by Izzy Santiago. Santiago was sensational, leading all Shenango scorers with 18 points and hauling in 6 rebounds. His ability to attack the rim and manufacture points kept Shenango within striking distance throughout the contest, even as the team struggled to find its rhythm from beyond the arc.
Matching that intensity was Kevon Washington, who logged a full 40 minutes of action. Washington finished with 13 points, including 3 triples, and matched Santiago with 6 rebounds. Washington's perimeter threat was a constant factor, forcing Greater Allegheny to stay home on the shooters and opening up lanes for his teammates.
Darius Williams orchestrated the offense with his usual precision, flirting with a double-double by tallying 12 points and 7 rebounds. Williams was instrumental in the transition game, adding 4 assists and providing a steady defensive presence with 2 blocks while playing 39 minutes.
In the paint, Rhys Grocott provided his trademark interior presence, finishing with 6 points and 7 rebounds. Grocott's efficiency as a distributor was also on display, as he tied for the team lead in rebounds while contributing 3 assists and swiping 2 steals to disrupt the PSUGA frontline.
Shenango also received a major spark from its supporting cast. Jordan Dotson was a vital presence off the bench, finishing with 9 points and 5 rebounds. Dotson's playmaking ability was a highlight, as he led the team with 4 assists and provided a defensive lift with a block during Shenango's second-half rally.
Despite the loss, Shenango's efficiency at the line was a silver lining, as the team shot a perfect 100% (7-of-7) from the free-throw line. However, Greater Allegheny's 42.6% field goal percentage and 19 points off turnovers proved to be the difference-maker in the final minutes.
While the result wasn't what Shenango hoped for on the road, the performance reinforced the team's resilience as they fight for positioning in the PSUAC standings. Shenango will look to bounce back and return to the win column this Monday, February 9, when they host Penn State New Kensington for "Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night."
