Senior Day Thriller Ends in 88-87 Loss
In a Senior Day thriller at the Buhl Club on January 31, Penn State Shenango (9-11, 5-7) fell just short in a heart-pounding 88-87 loss to Penn State Fayette. In a game defined by wild momentum swings and elite offensive execution, Shenango battled back from a double-digit second-half deficit to take a late lead, only to see Fayette escape with the victory in the closing seconds.
The afternoon was a showcase for Shenango's perimeter stars. Kevon Washington was sensational, leading the Lions with 25 points while shooting a highly efficient 10-of-15 from the field. Washington's ability to get to the rim and knock down three triples kept the Lions within striking distance throughout the contest. Matching that intensity was Izzy Santiago, who turned in a signature performance with 23 points and a game-high four steals. Santiago was a constant threat, facilitating the offense with four assists while providing the defensive pressure that ignited Shenango's transition game.
The most significant spark for the Lions came from Aidan Slocum, who delivered a massive performance off the bench. Slocum was nearly unstoppable in the interior, racking up 24 points on a blistering 12-of-15 shooting. Beyond his scoring, Slocum anchored the defense with a game-high three blocks and added three rebounds, providing the interior muscle and rim protection that fueled Shenango's second-half rally. In the paint, Rhys Grocott provided his trademark defensive presence, finishing with two blocks and a steal in 18 minutes of action. While the Lions struggled from deep, shooting just 22% from beyond the arc, their aggressive play in the paint and transition allowed them to shoot 48% from the floor overall.
Despite the loss, Shenango's resilience was on full display as they forced 16 Fayette turnovers and recorded 10 steals as a team. However, Fayette's efficiency from the free-throw line (93%) proved to be the difference-maker.
While the result wasn't what the Lions hoped for on Senior Day, the performance reinforced the team's grit as they fight for positioning in the PSUAC standings. Shenango will look to bounce back and start a new winning streak this Tuesday, February 3, when they host Penn State Beaver at 8 PM for the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game.
