Late Surge Falls Short as Greater Allegheny Topples Shenango
In a tough conference battle at the Buhl Club on January 20, Penn State Shenango (7-10, 3-6) dropped a 74-67 decision to Penn State Greater Allegheny. Despite a valiant second-half comeback in which the squad outscored their opponent 44-37, Shenango was unable to fully erase a 14-point halftime deficit. The team showcased significant defensive grit throughout the contest, recording a massive 10 blocks, but struggled to find a consistent offensive rhythm in the opening 20 minutes.
Kevon Washington led the scoring effort for Shenango, finishing with 20 points while knocking down four three-pointers and maintaining a perfect 4-of-4 mark from the free-throw line. Jordan Dotson provided a major spark off the bench, contributing 12 points, six rebounds, and two blocks in 23 minutes of action. Darius Williams and Izzy Santiago each added 11 points, with Williams nearly recording a double-double by pulling down nine rebounds to go along with a block and a steal.
Facilitating the offense was Aidan Slocum, who dished out a team-high five assists while contributing two blocks of his own. On the defensive interior, Rhys Grocott was a force, swatting away five shots and altering numerous others. Statistically, Shenango remained competitive on the glass with 33 rebounds and displayed high efficiency at the charity stripe, connecting on nearly 78% of their free-throw attempts.
Ultimately, Greater Allegheny's 40% shooting from beyond the arc allowed the visitors to maintain their lead down the stretch. Shenango's 10-block defensive performance highlighted the team's interior presence, but the early scoring gap proved too wide to bridge.
Shenango will look to carry the momentum from their 44-point second-half explosion into their next road matchup against New Kensington as they seek to climb back up the conference standings.
