Second Half Comeback Proves Not Enough as Scranton’s Hot Shooting Silences Shenango
In a high-scoring conference battle at the Buhl Club on January 17, Penn State Shenango (7-9, 3-5) fell to Penn State Scranton with a final score of 100-88. Despite a resilient second-half effort, the squad was unable to overcome a difficult first period where Scranton built a 59-42 lead. Shenango found their rhythm after the break, outscoring their opponent 46-41 in the final 20 minutes, but the mountain was simply too high to climb against a Scranton team that connected on a remarkable 20 three-pointers.
The afternoon was headlined by an unbelievable individual performance from Izzy Santiago, who dominated the floor with a massive double-double. Santiago finished with a game-high 34 points and 14 rebounds, shooting an efficient 13-of-21 from the field and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. His relentless energy on the glass, which included six offensive rebounds, kept Shenango competitive and provided spark after spark for the home crowd.
Supporting Santiago's explosive night, Shenango saw balanced contributions across the roster. Darius Williams facilitated the offense with precision, recording 13 points and seven assists while adding two blocks and two steals on the defensive end. Devin Alston reached double figures with 11 points, and Kevon Washington chipped in 10 points. Off the bench, Aidan Slocum provided a significant playmaking boost, dishing out a team-high eight assists to go along with eight points of his own.
Statistically, Shenango excelled in several key areas, leading the battle on the boards 42-38 and outscoring Scranton in the paint 38-24. The team also displayed exceptional ball security, committing only eight turnovers while tallying 25 assists on 35 made field goals. Ultimately, the difference came down to the perimeter, where Scranton's 50% shooting from three-point range proved to be the deciding factor in the contest.
Shenango will look to channel the offensive firepower displayed in the second half as the team regroups for the next matchup on Tuesday, aiming to turn these strong individual performances into a key conference victory.
