Washington Breaks Record as Shenango Edges Beaver 98–97 in Rivalry Thriller
MONACA, Pa. – In a rivalry showdown that delivered from start to finish, Penn State Shenango pulled out a 98–97 road victory over Penn State Beaver on Tuesday night, fueled by Kevon Washington's record-breaking nine made three-pointers and a relentless team comeback that energized the "Pack the Fieldhouse" crowd.
Beaver jumped out to an early double-digit lead, taking advantage of Shenango's slow start and hitting timely shots to build a 33–19 advantage. But Shenango answered with a surge of its own—Washington ignited the comeback from deep, Izzy Santiago attacked the basket with confidence, and Aidan Slocum along with Jordan Dotson delivered key bench minutes. A late three from Dotson helped Shenango trim the deficit to 52–48 at halftime.
The second half turned into an all-out battle. Darius Williams opened the period with an and-one finish, tying the game moments later. Santiago kept scoring in traffic, and Washington continued his historic night by drilling multiple threes, including momentum-shifting shots that pushed Shenango ahead. Beaver countered each run, setting up one of the most dramatic finishes of the season.
Trailing 95–90 inside the final three minutes, Shenango mounted a final push. Slocum buried back-to-back clutch threes—one from the right wing and another off a kickout from Alston—to give the Lions a 96–95 lead. After Beaver briefly regained the advantage, Williams delivered the game-winning moment by snatching an offensive rebound and converting a tough putback with just over a minute left to make it 98–97.
Shenango's defense closed the door from there. Rhys Grocott came up with a crucial late-game block at the rim, and Beaver's last-second three-point attempt fell short before the Lions secured the rebound as time expired.
Washington finished with 28 points, 9 rebounds, and a program-record nine three-pointers—a record he broke just two games after setting it. Santiago added 24 points, while Williams nearly posted a double-double with 18 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. Slocum chipped in 12 points, including several of the game's biggest shots.
As a team, Shenango shot 16-of-38 from three (42.1%) and pulled down 19 offensive rebounds, key factors in such a tight rivalry contest.
