Owens Eclipses 1,000 Point Mark
SHARON, PA - In the final seconds of an emotional night at the Buhl Club, Penn State Shenango sophomore guard D'Montez Owens, of Warren, Ohio, surpassed the 1,000-point mark in just his second collegiate season. The night began with Owens watching fellow teammates Kevin Kirby, Malik Weatherington, and Sincere Lopez receive senior night honors, but as the night played out he knew he had a shot at something memorable himself. He came into the game needing 21 points to reach the mark, but with this being the final game of the 2022-23 season, it would be his last opportunity until November.
After being fouled on a layup attempt with :40 seconds left in the contest, Owens stepped to the line for what might have been his final chance of the season. Family and friends watched on with their phones recording the moment, as "Munch" sunk the historic free-throw. The game was stopped briefly as Owens received hugs from teammates Cameron Brown and Kevin Kirby, as well as one from Penn State Fayette's Xavier Boyd.
Head Coach Bruce Johnson said of the achievement, "We are tremendously proud of D'Montez. This is not just an achievement as a result of his ability to score, but a true testament to his durability, how he takes care of his body, as well as his consistency. You always know what you're going to get from him in a game. He has earned the respect of everyone in our conference and we are all glad to be a part of this truly special occasion. The future is bright for him, but even brighter for this still young program."
Over the past two seasons, Owens has shown his ability to score the basketball as well or better than anyone else with whom he shares the floor. In 56 games at Shenango, he has scored in double-figures 47 times, with a career game-high of 34 points last February vs Penn State New Kensington. The local kid, D'Montez Owens, capped off the 2022-23 Shenango Men's Basketball season with an incredible moment.
