We Are the Weekend!! Penn State Shenango Basketball goes 3-1 in its four-game tilt against the visiting NE Schools
Sharon, Pa the Penn State Shenango Men (7-16) and Women's Basketball (5-9, 5-8) programs welcomed PSU Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton for a 4-game bout against these two prominent northeast PSU Programs.
This weekend's title tilt began on Saturday and gave the crowd two amazing hard-fought games. The Wilkes-Barre Men's team (15-2) rode into the Rust Belt with a 14-2 record, and the Men's team gave them all that they had. Jashun Cobb and D'Montez Owens each posted 10 points and Kevin Kirby led the way as he grabbed 7 boards to help keep the game close. Shenango trailed 37-36 at halftime.
The second half saw a near duplicate performance from Owens and Cobb. Owens added a 3 pointer to finish with 23 on the night to lead all scorers. Cobb contributed another 10 of his own and Christopher Williams exploded for 10 as well to finish with 12 pts on the night. The visiting Wilkes-Barre Lions shot 66% from the floor in the second half compared to Shenago's 42% and it ended up being the difference maker as Wilkes-Barre took the win 84-75. This would be the last loss of the weekend for the Shenango Lions.
The Women had a close contest of their own on Saturday as well. The Wilkes-Barre Lions (0-14, 0-11) may have come in winless, but they did not come in lazy. The visiting Ladies from Lackawanna County came ready to fight. Stephanie Jaramillo led all players with an amazing 28 points. She notched 11 of those in the first half but Shenango's newest addition; So, Toni Donaldson posted 11 of her own to help Shenango to a 35-18 halftime lead. Wilke-Barre countered in the second half as Jaramillo poured in 17 from the floor; however, Shenango's swagger would not be matched. Three of the four starters ended in double digits as Nae Fryer posted 16, Karsyn Rupert posted 11, and Donaldson finished with 18 points respectively. Mya McNevin scored a season high 8 off the bench and Shenango took the victory 63-52.
SUNDAY VS. SCRANTON
Sunday saw Shenango eager to avoid another split. The Women were up first as they welcomed PSU Scranton (3-13, 3-10) for part two of The Battle at the Buhl. The Shenango Lady Lions set the pace for the entire afternoon in the very 1st quarter. Nae Fryer led all scorers with 9 in the first frame as Shenango posted a season high 30 points in the first frame. Rupert was unrivaled in the second frame. She posted 5 points and grabbed 4 boards to help lead The Lady Lions took a commanding 54-20 halftime lead. Shenango did not let off the gas in the second half. Donaldson posted 10 buckets and would go on to lead all shooters with 21 points on the day. Once again, the Lady Lions saw four starters reach double digits as Donaldson posted 21, Fryer notched 16, Hailee Aguinaga posted 13, and Sharon's own Jaysina Sellers knifed her way in and out of the paint all day to notch 11 points. Rupert finished with 9 points on the day and led all players with 16 boards. McNevin duplicated her prior days 8 points with another ocho to lead all bench players. The scoring onslaught saw Shenango post a season high 86 points enroute to an 86-49 victory.
The women set the bar high for The Men's Team, and they answered the call in their matinee performance. Shenango was ready for the Scranton Men's Team (6-13, 3-10.) Fueled by the prior day's loss, Cobb and the Lions were ready to pounce. Cobb got off to another hot start in this game as well posting 12 points. Williams added 5 and DiMarius Hill was stellar off the bench posting 5 of his own and grabbing 4 boards to help Shenango to an exciting 35-35 tie at the end of one. The Lions knew that if they wanted the Sunday Sweep that their scoring touch would have to be better in the second half, much to the delight of the Crowd and the team it was. D'Montez Owens led all second half scorers with 10. He also posted 10 boards to lead all rebounders. Hill posted 9 of his own and Cobb notched 7 points to help lead the team. Fr. Malik Davis came alive as well pouring in 4 of his own and grabbing 4 boards of his own to help lead Shenango to a 74-69 to complete the Sunday Sweep of Scranton!
Both the Men and Women's next game is a doubleheader this Tuesday, February 1st as they welcome cross town rival Penn State Beaver.
